Trading Safety
- What can I do before I decide to buy or sell an item?
- Ask the seller questions about the item, such as:
The condition of a used item, or if there are any problems or defects with the item. Whether the item is an original or copy
- Ask the seller about the payment and shipping:
What kind of payment methods are accepted. Cash and transfers are the least safe and should be avoided. Consider escrow services for more expensive items. Ask about return and refund policies. Ask about the shipping price, and where the item can be shipped to. Shipping insurance, tracking, and confirmation.
- Check the bad traders list under "Discuss" on the central navigation to see if anyone else on GoChange has had a complaint about the trader.
- Always take extra caution when doing business with international transactions, or with expensive or popular items.
- What should I do before I send the item/money?
- The other parties' contact information in the GoChange system will be sent to you. In addition to this, you should request and verify the other parties e-mail address, phone number, and address. A physical address is always better than a PO box.
- Make sure you come to full agreement that satisfies both of the parties requirements about payment, shipping costs, and payment. If you do not come to a full agreement, do not ship your item/money.
- If you are buying an item, pick the safest and traceable payment method. Paypal and Credit cards are the safest way to pay, as the transaction is traceable. The next safest are personal checks, cashier's checks, and money orders, where the transaction is traceable to a mailing address. The least safe methods of payment are money transfers and cash payments, which should be avoided. For more expensive items consider using an escrow service. visit http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/online/payments.htm for more information.
- If you are selling an item, pick a shipping method that gives you a reciept for shipping the item, or confirmation that the buyer received the item. Consider insuring the item.
- After you have sent the money/item, notify the other party so they will expect it. Make sure you keep all records about the transaction. This includes all e-mails exchanged, contact/address information, shipping receipts, and bank statements or returned checks.
- What do I do if sent my item/payment, but I have not yet received their item/payment?
The other party may not have received your item/payment, or they may have forgotten to ship their item/payment. - Send the other member an e-mail, call them, and/or send them a letter to their address.
- Contact the service that was used to send or recieve the payment.
- Contact the service that was used to ship the item.
- What do I do if other party has received my item/payment, and they won't ship their item/payment or respond to me?
If you have confirmed that the other party has received the item/payment, and they are no longer responding to your letters or calls, and you still have not received their item/payment: - Make sure you have all of your records, including all e-mails exchanged, contact/address information, shipping receipts, and bank statements or returned checks. Keep the originals of these and give copies to law enforcement.
- Contact your local law enforcement.
- Contact the local law enforcement in the area of the other member.
